Waiting Parents: Taylor and Nikki

Hi! We’re Taylor & Nikki. Before we share about ourselves, we want to acknowledge the peculiar nature of this process. First off, this is not a sales pitch! We truly believe that God is in control of this, and that he’s working in your life and in our lives and the lives of other expecting mothers – all at once. We trust that He will connect us with the right birth mother. That may or may not be you but, regardless, we want you to know that we see you, we care about your story, and we want the best for you. We know that there are so many factors to consider and so many emotions to work through when it comes to putting your baby up for adoption. We are not interested in forcing anything… We want what’s best for you, and we have so much respect for you. That being said, thanks for taking the time to have a look at our profile! We spent a lot of time trying to put together the most honest look into our life as a family.

Who are we?

Taylor and Nikki. We’ve been happily married for 8 years and even after this long, we still love to be around each other all the time. We met at a church in Chicago way back when, and after dating for some time, we found ourselves with an unplanned pregnancy. We were shocked, scared, and had no idea what to do. Thankfully, our community came around us with much support and in 2013, we welcomed our first child. Shortly after her birth, we were married and realized our time in Chicago was coming to an end, and Texas was calling our names. Why tell you this? Because we’ve been where you are. We’ve sat in the middle of an unplanned pregnancy and God guided us… one foot in front of the other, day after day. 8 years later… here we are. We are in our thirties, we have two beautiful kids, we love our life, and we wouldn’t change a thing.

Taylor is a born and raised Texan. Like Nikki, he was also brought up by a single, working mother. As a kid, Taylor lived in a south Dallas community with a high percentage of low-income families. After graduating from high school, he moved north to Chicago where he played music and began a profession in graphic design. Taylor now works for a church as the Director of Communications. He loves the flexibility of his job and that it allows him to be home with his family. Taylor’s upbringing has made him a passionate advocate for marginalized communities. In addition to playing music, he enjoys home projects and building relationships.

Nikki is Colombian. She was the first person in her family to be born in the United States. She was born in Miami, FL and grew up in a multi-generational household, within a Hispanic community. In grade school, Nikki relocated with her mom to Chicago, where she lived until she was an adult. Spending her childhood in a household that spoke English as a second language has driven Nikki and Taylor to expose their kids to a range of cultures beyond their own. The two have always dreamed of a diverse family unit where various cultures are celebrated and, perhaps, represented. Nikki loves to play tennis and is currently trying to read more books.

What about our kids?

We have two biological kids, Addison (8) and Amelia (4), who we call Millie. While these sisters are about 4 years apart, they play together constantly and thrive using their imaginations. Addison is such a great big sister. She’s sweet, sensitive, and wants to be with people all the time. Millie is slightly shy but loves to laugh when she warms up. While she’s younger, she’s super smart and can hang with the big kids! They both play tennis and have just recently started trying out ice skating. They are so ready for another sibling to love! As we’ve talked about adoption with them, they’ve said, “We have room in our house and in our hearts for another baby!” Which we think is spot on.

What about pets?

We have a dog named Mango. He is an Aussiedoodle and is just about a year old. He makes for a good playmate for the kids, which is great because that’s all he wants to do! When we brought him home, we hired a personal trainer to help with manners. He does puppy things but all things considered, he’s a really well-behaved dog that loves his family.

What do we do all day?

For fun as a family we love to hang with our friends, who also all have kids. We’ve got a deck and love to grill and host little inflatable pool parties and things like that. We enjoy going on hikes, riding bikes, visiting the farmers market on Saturdays, playing tennis, going to the zoo, and traveling. Experiences and memories are something we love to prioritize. We go almost everywhere together as a family, even just running errands and stuff! That said, the kids also have plenty of independent play time and love creating, dancing, exploring, and building forts. Taylor goes in to the office to work Monday-Thursday, which is only about a mile away from the house so we’ll usually have lunch together. Nikki works part-time from home and holds it down during the week – homeschooling the kids, taking them to Spanish class and having playdates with friends.
